Garfield County is dedicated to ensuring a healthy environment for its residents. We are seeking dedicated and skilled Environmental Health Specialists to join our team and help maintain and improve public health through comprehensive environmental health services.

This position will focus on consumer protection. Primary job duties include educating and inspecting restaurants, childcare centers, schools, and other retail food establishments to ensure compliance with state regulations and the safety of the community's health.


Position Overview

We are hiring for multiple levels of Environmental Health Specialist positions (I, II, and III) to conduct technical environmental health functions and participate in environmental health programs related to various areas including oil and gas development, air and water quality, hazardous materials management, and more. These roles are integral to maintaining the health and safety of our community and require a commitment to public service and attention to detail.


Key Responsibilities

Environmental Health Specialist I:

  • Conduct routine technical environmental health work under supervision.
  • Perform inspections and investigations related to various environmental health areas.
  • Collect field samples, write reports, and interact with regulatory agencies.
  • Provide public education and collaborate with other departments.

Environmental Health Specialist II:

  • Perform all functions of the Specialist I with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in one or more environmental health programs.
  • Assist with policy development and train other employees.
  • Prepare materials for public hearings and respond to media inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications

For Environmental Health Specialist I:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, or a related field (30 science credits), or an Associate degree with one year of relevant experience.

For Environmental Health Specialist II:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Preferred: Registered Environmental Health Specialist, Certified Professional – Food Safety, or other relevant credentials for level II.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Ability to lift up to 45 pounds, move between diverse environments, and conduct inspections and assessments.
  • Exposure to outdoor and potentially hazardous conditions during fieldwork.
  • Proficient in using various environmental health equipment.

Additional Information

  • A pre-employment background check, including criminal, education, and motor vehicle record checks, is required.
  • This position may involve travel within and outside the County, including overnight stays.
